New Japan Cup Opening Round Match: Toru Yano defeated Tama Tonga

New Japan Cup Opening Round Match: Bad Luck Fale defeated Michael Elgin

New Japan Cup Opening Round Match: EVIL defeated Hirooshi Tanahashi

The opening round of the New Japan Cup saw four first round matches with some shocking moments and some favourites being knocked out early. I was surprised Elgin went out but he lost to a very impressive Bad Luck Fale who now should seriously be considered as a favourite. Yano seemed more surprised than anyone else that he was able to sneak a victory against Tama Tonga. Nagata was very impressive against Tanga Roa and is another who is looking like he could be a serious contender to win the whole thing. After spitting a mouthful of Black Mist in to the eyes of Tanahashi, Evil quickly finished him off and moves forward to the second round. With the four who went through and the four that have been eliminated it is becoming harder to pick a winner as they all look so impressive.

New Japan Cup Round One

New Japan Cup Round One
Tomohiro Ishii defeated Kenny Omega.

Another fantastic and very shocking day in the last four first round matches. Juice Robinson looked great in victory against The Tokyo Pimp, his goal of getting a shot at the IC title is looking more achievable after this victory. A fast paced match between Yoshi-Hashi and Sanada finally saw Sanada make Yoshi-Hashi tap out when he locked in his Skull Crusher submission. The fight between Shibata and Sazuki was incredible both delivered many devastating blows but after countless attempts at submitting each other it was a viscous Penalty Kick from Shibata that won him the match. In the match of the card Ishii was able to overcome Kenny Omega, now I’m not surprised that Ishii made it through but I am kind of surprised that Kenny went out in the first round. This was a fantastic battle with so many high impact moves that could of finished the match but it was Ishii that rocked Omega with a sick Headbutt and then followed up with a Brainbuster to end the match.

Well the guy I and I’m sure many others picked to win is now out it is getting harder to pick a winner but on this day the one stand out guy for me that could win it is Katsuyori Shibata and who would not want to see him going one on one with The Rain Maker Kazuchika Okada for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship. But with the way this tournament has gone so far it is impossible to predict any outcome that is what has made this so compelling to watch so far. The second round is only going to get better than the first in my opinion with so many interesting match ups.
