New Japan Cup Semi Finals 19/3/17
Bad Luck Fale defeated Evil
Katsuyori Shibata defeated Tomohiro Ishii
These were two very different matches in the semi finals. Bad Luck Fale and Evil had a very hardcore brawl using weapons and fighting on the outside during portions of the match. This type of contest better suited the bigger Fale who was able to win the match after hitting his finisher Bad Luck Fall.
The match between Shibata and Ishii was the true definition of Strong Style as both took turns to try and hit the other as hard as possible to knock their opponent of their feet. It was crazy how much punishment both men were able to withstand and with both barley able to stand by the end it was Shibata who was able to lock in a rear naked choke to put Ishii to sleep.
New Japan Cup Final 20/3/17
Katsuyori Shibata defeated Bad Luck Fale
There is no doubt that this has been a great tournament there have been so many shocks with early exits of favourites in the first round, surprise victories and statements being made. This tournament proved yet again that New Japan Pro Wrestling is the Best Wrestling Company in the world.
This was a perfect way to end the tournament with two wrestlers with completely different styles, different stories but both had earned the right to be in the final and they both deserved to walk away with the Cup. Fale dominated the majority of the match using his power to overcome any attempt made by Shibata at a submission or delivering and shots. Finally after a while it seemed time was the biggest enemy of Fale as the big guy started to slow and began to look tired. This gave Shibata a chance but he still could not put away Fale. When Fale hit his version of a Samoan Spike and Shibata barley kicked out it seemed that Fale would only need to hit his Bad Luck Fall finisher to win but as he had Shibata hoisted up above his head Shibata was able to move himself into a position to be able to apply a rear naked choke whilst on the back of Fale. Then as Fale faded and was out cold in a seated position Shibata released the choke and hit the ropes and delivered a devastating Penalty Kick and pinned Fale, the Ref counted to the fall and Shibata won The New Japan Cup. After the match Shibata announced that he would challenge The Rain Maker Kazuchika Okada for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship.
